SELFISH PRICKS

I daresay it would be possible to make regular updates - even daily ones - to a blog consisting purely of anecdotes about the rudeness and inconsiderate behaviour of strangers in public places. After all, I observe at least one incident that could form the basis of a short piece almost every time I make the weekday commute back and forth to the office.

Every now and then I see some new completely new form of selfishness or low-level aggression. But most incidents are just reworkings of the same old nonsense. Consider, for example, the announcements made at stations reminding us all to stand aside from the carriage doors when a train first arrives at the platform, thereby enabling alighting passengers to get off before we try to get on. Perhaps, like me, you briefly think yes, I know, fer Chrissakes every time you hear this instruction. But almost every time this thought begins to form, I am immediately reminded of why such announcements remain necessary. Because almost without fail, some PRICK insists on trying to barge onto the train without allowing those disembarking to step down first.

So then you get on the train and you sit down. What's next? Oh, yes. The guy sitting next to you (often no bigger, taller or wider than you are) insists on waging a silent war on your personal space, gradually widening the gap between his thighs, as if to accommodate unfeasibly large testicles. But you can feel sure that his ballsack is no larger than yours (if you have one). He doesn't have some localised elephantiasis of the scrotum. He doesn't have an unmanageably swollen prong. He's not the victim of his own red-hot masculine physicality.  He is just a FUCKING ARSEHOLE, massaging the pain of having to live with his own toxic "personality" by engaging in a spot of physical intimidation. Just for a few minutes, it feels like he hates himself just a little less than usual. Hardly anyone ever raises a word of objection to these guys. It crosses your mind but you think better of it. Well, apart from the couple of times it got particularly silly...

Anyway, that stuff happens on a daily basis. Writing about it would rapidly become wearyingly repetitive.

But I do have to say something about the amazing scenes I witnesses in the departure lounge close to one of the gates at Palermo airport recently. I wish I'd taken pictures. But words will have to suffice.

So this seating area was probably just about adequate for the size of aircraft for which we were all waiting - i.e. as many seats in the lounge as there were on the 'plane. But was I able to sit down for the thirty minutes or so that I had to spend in that place? Was I fuck! Why? Because of the amazing number of PRICKS who thought it was just fine to sprawl across two, three or even four seats. Yeah, they think. I need one seat for my arse, one for my legs, another for my feet and another one for my hand luggage. I stood opposite one of these tools and looked him RIGHT IN THE EYE. I looked along the seats he was occupying. He saw me doing it. Reaction? Glazed eyes and visibly pretending not to notice I was there.

Right at that moment, another Englishman began remonstrating with one of the seat-hoggers. It all got a bit heated. So, naturally enough, my wife BEGGED me not to become involved in a similar scene. So I didn't.

WHO ARE THESE FUCKING PEOPLE? WHY DO THEY THINK THAT STUFF IS OK?

Feeling happy?

Remember Happy Eater? Presumably inspired by America's roadside diners, these dismal boxes of bad food were littered around Britain's motorways and A-roads between 1973 and 1997, when they were gobbled up by the corpulent and equally nasty Little Chef. The Happy Eater logo, you may recall, resembled a bulimic Pac-Man, managing to grin gamely while attempting to purge the ersatz "Real American" hamburgers that been dropped onto the kitchen floor in order to separate them from the frozen multi-patty clumps in which they were stored before being "griddled to order". Eating on the road in the UK is now stupidly expensive, but the recent emergence of mini-supermarkets at motorway service stations and the evolution of the pre-packed sandwich are moving the experience towards tolerability. But in their heyday, Britain's  two major highway dining chains exerted a baleful influence. If hunger struck, there were often only two choices: massively extend your journey time by leaving the motorway to seek decent fare in some town centre, or endure the entirely depressing ambiance of the Little Chef or Happy Eater.

But why would memories of Happy Eater come to mind while holidaying in Bulgaria? The answer comes in the form of this country's very own burgeoning chain of "casual" restaurants. As well as having a go at livening up the dining scene in the downtown areas and new retail parks of Bulgaria's larger cities, this expanding food empire (they're getting into franchising soon and are looking to grow across the Balkans and even into Russia and Ukraine) owns outlets arranged along the country's highways. As we were drawing closer to the Black Sea coast on Saturday afternoon, we stopped at one by the side of the E772 and close to the village of Kyosevtsi.  Hunger had definitely struck, thirst was also an issue, and we hadn't seen anywhere else to grab a bite for quite a few miles. Having spotted other branches along the often narrow and often bumpy roads which pass for major routes in Bulgaria, I wasn't really keen. The chain rejoices in the name Happy Bar & Grill, which, along with its presence by the country's main roads, was what evoked memories of the late, unlamented Happy Eater chain.

As we clambered out of the car on a sweltering afternoon, I asked myself why anyone ever risks including the word "happy" when naming a consumer brand. Surely a case of setting the bar too high when it comes to customer satisfaction? Happy Eater must be the definitive case in point.

Putting these thoughts to one side, we went inside. Definitely a case of that wannabe US dining experience, I thought. Another contribution to the blanding and homogenisation of life under globalisation: sometimes quickly and sometimes slowly ironing out the millions of local differences that make it interesting to travel around the world. But the simple fare (local variations on the burger and chicken nugget themes, really) was edible and served up with the swiftness you'd like when wanting not to take too long a break from your journey. However, while the beer (my other half was driving) was nicely cold, I can't say the food or anything else about the place made me happy. Happiness is elusive, isn't it? I'm not sure we all agree on what it is. Is it found in those short bursts of joy which brighten the day and remain in the memory? Or is it more to do with long stretches of contentment about one's lot in life? Or is it both? Or do the answers to these questions vary enormously across cultures and personality types? Fucked if I know. But I feel sure that eating an inexpensive burger in a nicely air-conditioned building with free WiFi, while alright in itself, is not an experience from which genuine happiness can be derived.

I was also struck by the demeanour of the efficient waitresses working there. Simply put, these girls did not look happy. Nothing like happy. Perhaps not actually completely miserable. But not happy. Bright eyes and dazzling smiles were definitely not in evidence. I don't know if the wages are bad or if tips are generally not forthcoming (I tipped, by the way), but every face spoke of some lack of joy. If I were to guess at the source of melancholy among the waiting staff at the Kyosevtsi branch of Happy Bar & Grill, the uniforms would be my hunch. I think it's pretty rough on those girls that they are asked to wear what can't even really be described as miniskirts. Pelmet would be more like it. It must be reasonably unnerving to think that bending for a dropped fork would involve showing your underwear to a roomful of diners. Maybe it gives some customers a little thrill, but is it really cool in a place most of whose patrons (in the summer, at least) seem to be folks with their kids on the way to the seaside? Sort it out, Happy Bar & Grill. The little skirts might be contributing to the gap between the implicit claims in your brand name and the looks on the faces of your perfectly efficient and polite staff. It was better than the fucking Happy Eater, though.

That man Sadowitz is clearly not unaware of the zillions of hits that his ancient bit of Savile-exposing got back in October. Now he's using the buzz around it to promote his current run of shows at London's Leicester Square Theatre. Tonight's show is already under way but there seem to be a few tickets left for shows later this week and from 3rd to 5th of January. You need to see this, for fuck's sake.

this is my england will be getting a hit of "Britain's brightest foul mouthed, fully integrated immigrant" on the last of these dates so come along and say hello. I'll be the 7ft guy with the top hat, halitosis and large bag of sweets with very crinkly wrappers.

JUMP, DAMMIT!!!

Twenty-four million quid for an injury-prone player who wants to leave, who has only a year to go on his contract and who has only really had one truly cracking recent season. Yes, a good bit of business by Arsenal today, especially if Messrs Giroud and Podolski prove to be decent signings. But the best bit about it is that Piers Morgan is now obliged to jump off Santa Monica pier and be dragged down into the Pacific by lead weights. Back in November he promised to do exactly that in the event of Robin van Persie leaving the north London club:

It's anyone's guess as to why Morgan felt that his suicide threat would discourage the Dutch forward from seeking new opportunities away from the Emirates Stadium. But it must be something to do with the incredible hubris of the man. The preening ninny may actually believe he's a widely liked public figure rather than an object of scorn. Christ, he's even disliked simply for his smugness and smarminess by people who don't remember he was fired by a tabloid newspaper for being conned into printing photos that purported to depict British soldiers abusing an Iraqi man but which turned out to be fakes. Perhaps you will recall a former commander of the defamed regiment commenting that the Mirror's error had put lives in danger and had served as a recruiting poster for al-Qaeda. If you do remember that comment, you may have found it very rum indeed when Morgan spent much of his time during the Olympics handing out Twitter lectures on patriotism to any British medal winners who chose not to belt out a lusty rendition of God Save the Queen.

He's a massive egoist and a hypocritical shit, isn't he? Wouldn't it be great if concrete evidence of his involvement in phone hacking does come to light. Still, perhaps that's beside the point if the sociopathic bell-end is going to make good his promise down in Santa Monica today.

Go on, Piers! DO IT!

5-step guide to losing a follower

STEP ONE

Notice that someone that you follow but have never met (who also follows you, and with whom you have an interest in common) has retweeted a really dismal and fairly mean-spirited 'joke'... something like this, for example:

STEP TWO
Comment on the joke. Be sure to use a Latin term when picking apart the rhetorical device around which the joke is built. This is a very effective way of sounding like a smart arse.

STEP THREE
Imply that your interlocutor draws his or her ideas from a narrow selection of narrow-minded sources.

STEP FOUR
Move from implication mode to something more like attack mode.

STEP FIVE
You're blocked!

zombie apocalypse: not yet

stand down. do not head for high ground or arm yourself to the teeth. do not cancel your family trip to where the undead UNCLE WALT pores over the bones of European folk tales in his luxury air-conditioned charnel house. the great state of Florida is NOT, for now, as previously reported, the sparking point of the undead inferno that shall one day engulf our world of shopping malls, call centres and fast food outlets.

turns out that the feller who ate another chap's face in Miami last week was not a reanimated corpse or a victim of the RAGE virus. it's much more mundane. blame has been directed at a "new potent form of LSD"*. both the deceased (and apparently not subsequently reanimated) perpetrator and the disfigured victim seem to have been homeless men, of which the world's richest and most powerful country has a plentiful supply. no word yet on why both were naked or on how big a supply exists of this horrific new LSD variant. if it's widely available in south Florida, and if cannibalistic side-effects are set to be a recurrent feature of its use, then perhaps trips to Miami should be treated with a degree of caution.

keep calm and carry on and all that bollocks then. get on the plane to the parks and the larks and the cheap fat & protein.
_______________________________________________________
*though the famed entertainer Alex Jones would have it that the LSD angle is B.S. - in his world, more and more of us will soon be lunching on faces, this being the fallout from our diet of fluoride, artificial sweeteners and flu jabs. for the gravel-voice libertarian and New World Order worrier, every time you see a dopey kid or hear about someone texting while driving, you're noticing the early stages of his imagined slow-burn zombie apocalypse. lo-cal fizzy drink, anyone?

The zombie apocalypse predicted by the likes of George Romero finally seems to have started. The first signs of trouble were reported yesterday in Miami, Florida. It's time to prepare for the end of the world as we know it.

crazy names, crazy guys?

A top Twitter trend this afternoon is 'Gaylord Silly'. Say what? Mr. Silly is a Seychellois runner competing in the World Indoors Athletics Championships in Istanbul. This morning he broke his country's 800m record but still failed to qualify for the next round of his competition, coming in behind four other runners. But the name has struck a chord and, somewhat inevitably, there now seems to be a Gaylord Silly fan club on Facebook.

But this is not the first time that the little republic in the Indian Ocean has produced an exotically and amusingly named athlete. The IAAF website tells us that over 20 years ago, Silly's homeland was represented by a hurdler who rejoiced in the name Giovanny Fanny and who failed to make much of an impression at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona.

this CCTV footage shows a Mr. Dean Dinnen storming into Hull's Endyke pub with a working petrol-driven chainsaw on August 5th last year. he managed to slice through someone's arm. he'd been manhandled out the pub earlier on, having refused to put out his cigarette. a bit of an overreaction then.

Just a week ago, this is my england discovered a top Twitter loon in the form of someone who appeared to be an Everton fan and whose profile picture was of Adolf Hitler wearing the latest Toffees shirt. He was into hurling abuse at people in the public eye. Lots of abuse at lots of different people.

One of his last tweets read "I'm fucking destroyed off going to work. the thought of doing that shit till i die makes me want to cut my self. anyone fancy running me over".

Maybe someone did run him over. On Twitter, at least, @efc1978 is no more.

“We can only get our economy back on track by creating a climate in which the private sector can grow and develop, creating jobs and opportunities for people across the country. This year the Government is determined to help deliver many thousands of new jobs and I’m delighted that the companies joining me today are part of that.
“Across a whole range of areas you’re going to see the most pro-business, pro-growth, pro-jobs agenda ever unleashed by a government. Its [sic] time we looked forward to a positive, strong, confident Britain. By developing the right skills and jobs I am determined that the many not the few will share in the country’s prosperity.”

Some deucedly funny fish swim around the Twitter whale. Consider, for instance, the account whose profile picture shows Adolf Hitler wearing the current Everton F.C. shirt. This person occasionally hurls abuse at prominent people, often seemingly apropos of nothing. Here is a selection:
  • 25th July, to actor Sir Ian McKellen: "alright gandalf you nobhead. You shit old gay bastard."
  • 1st August, to Indian cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar (during his side's test series defeat to England): "ha ha your getting battered. Stick to what your good at. Making curry and stinking of shit."
  • 26th September, to Hollywood star Tom Hanks: "saving private Ryan was good but big was shit so fuck off"
  • 26th September, to rapper-turned-preacher MC Hammer: "your shit music and massive keks were a crime against humanity. Fucking spook"
  • 26th September, to pop star and DJ Boy George: "you are the personification of evil. You are without doubt gods biggest mistake"
  • 26th September, to girl band member turned tabloid regular Kerry Katona: "get back on the beak. You know you want to. Go on fail like you've always failed. You're a shit mum"
  • 29th September, to the account of anti-fascist action group UAF: "why don't you all fuck off you Fucking wankers. All you are is anti British. Multiculturalism can suck my balls. #muslimsarecunts #pork"
  • 4th October, to wrestling legend Hulk Hogan: "fuck off"
  • 7th October, to footballer Wayne Rooney: "I see your dad is a match fixing cunt. How fucking tight are you anyway. Give him some cash so he doesn't need to commit fraud"
  • 8th October, to actor Matthew Perry: "friends was shit. I see your career ended as soon as it finished. You might as well just kill yourself u un-funny fucking fag"
  • 23rd October, to actor Stephen Baldwin: "why do u believe in god. You have no evidence he exists. Answer my fucking question you deluded cunt. #Godcaneatmyshit"
  • 12th December, to boxer Amir Khan, shortly after his defeat by Lamont Peterson: "im absolutely made up you got beat you complete cretin. love to see you fight mayweather as he could do you some real damage"
Just this week, to no one in particular, efc1978 tweeted "I'm fucking destroyed off going to work. the thought of doing that shit till i die makes me want to cut my self. anyone fancy running me over"
